I’m looking for a good digital camera to use in archaeology fieldwork. I don’t need an SLR, a point-and-shoot will work. From this description the Fujifilm XP30 sounds like it may do the trick. Are there any others that you would recommend? I need a camera that can take a beating, that’s dustproof, takes high-resolution photos (greater than 6 megapixels), does very well with high-quality, close-up photos (i.e., like for a close-up of a small artifact), that’s waterproof (not necessary but would help), has a substantial optical zoom, takes black and white and color photos (I think most of them do this nowadays), has substantial battery life, and that has a built in GPS. Some other features that I would like but that aren’t totally necessary are the ability to use rechargeable AA batteries and the ability to use different card formats (e.g., SD, Compact Flash, micro-SD, memory stick). I’m looking for something that is $500 or less.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
