Samsung SMX-K40 and SMX-K45 Camcorders

Samsung today introduced the SMX-K40 and SMX-K45 camcorders that can record standard definition video at a resolution of 720x480px, and then can be played back on an HDTV in near full-HD quality thanks to advanced upscaling technology and HDMI connectivity. The SMX-K40 and SMX-K45 adopt a 65x Intelli-Zoom which allows users to use up to 52x optical zoom, advanced Optical Image Stabilizer to capture the moment perfectly even if your hands are shaking, and a Schneider KREUZNACH lens. The Samsung SMX-K45 has an internal 32GB Solid State Drive (SSD), providing up to 20 hours and 40 minutes of recording time depending on the recording mode. The Samsung SMX-K40 does not have internal storage and requires the use the of a SD/SDHC card. The SMX-K40 and SMX-K45 will be available August 2009 for $329.99 and $499.99, respectively.

Looks nice? To good to be true? It is! The Samsung SMX-K45SN/XAA is a bad investment. I got one and within a week it went into full telephoto zoom when ever powered on and stays stuck there in full zoom. It unzoomes as its powering off and rezooms as it powers back on. Samsungs support just made things worse. I bought it at Fry’s/Thunderbird when I was in Phoenix last week. I was visiting from Toronto and needed a small camcorder on short notice.

When I call for support I was denied even telephone support. Samsung Canada said it is a US only product and told me I was out of luck. My only option is to go in person back to Frys and return it. The sad part of all this is it just may need a hard reset. None that I could find and I was denied phone support. I’ve had Canons and Sony and never had problems with US/Canada warranty. Best to stick to those brands and play it safe.

When the SMX-K45 did work it worked ok but beware if being stranded with a dead battery. Bearly got an hour out of it and getting a spare battery was not possible. I wide angle lens option was hard to get to fit the39mm lens ring.

Bottom line.. Samsung is still a low end/high risk brand. They products look attractive at time of purchase but buyer beware. This is not the only time I’ve had problems getting support (a BD player I bought in Canada – Took a lot of time on the phone and two weeks to get a firmware update CD).
